Those of us who are old enough to be on the web during its early days know that we used to measure bandwitdh in kbps.  In fact, I remember the delight when we switched to 56K.  And DSL was heavenly.  And as anyone will agree, the higher the bandwidth the more exciting the web has become.

In my opinion the day we can get television quality on a PC or mobile device, we will be in another era.  While I do not expect that we will watch much TV on a desk in the office or do a lot of surfing on a TV in the living room, the option will be great.

So it is great news that Cingular is launching a 3G network.  When coupled with a compatible device and service plan, the service provides average mobile data connections between 400-700 Kbps on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second.

It is not cheap (yet) and not available to everyone but it is an exciting development.
