There is no simple answer but one thing that I do know is that no one became rich by working hard or doing illegal things.  In the first case, you can merely hope to have an average life and in the other one, while you might get rich for a while, eventually you will end up in prison.  Plus, you may never be able to enjoy your illegal money.

Based on the rich friends that I have and my own experience becoming somewhat rich, the secret is in how you think, what you do, and how you make choices.  For instance, if you are poor right now and looking at the mess in the housing market, you have probably started to cut back and are holding on to your money.  My rich friends, on the other hand, are not only investing in real estate, they are also buying other luxurious items since there is so much on sale these days.
